Mugwech--Welcome

Shirley Heyer enjoying the new swings and recreational space at the Cepro entry to the Midtown Greenway, between 10th and 11th avenues.  The structures holding the swings bear the word "welcome" in six languages: English, Braille, Dakota, Ojibwe, Spanish, and Somali.  This is phase one of the project which covers the east side of the block.

Come Oct. 6 at 5:30 pm for an open house celebrating the built section, and try out a swing.

A Sweet & Juicy New Year

Denise cuts up apples to eat with honey, per tradition, on Rosh Hashanah ("the head of the year," in Hebrew: ראש השנה‎), in hopes of a sweet and juicy year ahead. The holiday marking the Jewish New Year began at sunset last night and ends at sunset September 30.

Red Tree

Despite the lovely warm day, maximum temperature of just over 80, this tree clearly says it is autumn.

Fall Colors

Fall is my favorite time of year.  There is so much contrast: the bright yellows and dark reds, the shrivled next to the blooming, etc.  I think that this red flower and the wilting daisies are a perfect example of the changing of seasons.

Make Whittier Prettier

Whittier neighborhood is named for Quaker abolitionist and poet John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892), author of such florid lines as,

''Blessings on thee, little man,
Barefoot boy, with cheek of tan!
With thy turned-up pantaloons,
And thy merry whistled tunes;
With thy red lip, redder still
Kissed by strawberries on the hill"

Yellow Stripe

How far can an image be stripped down ––or taken out of context–– before it is no longer recognizable?

Weird Things Happen At Night

How does one explain this kind of happening?  Let's just say, it was a creative moment. a leap of the imagination, one of those synchronicities between two Phillips-Whittier 365 photographers, Esther (in helmet) and Jo Ann.

Tree Hide-away

This tree is a favorite spot for children who go to Whittier school.  I still love this tree and remember having lots of fun under it's piney boughs.

Green wall and flowers

This ivy-coverd wall, on Grand Ave.,  is refreshing in the midst of urban grittyness.  You could be in England.

Vote Here

Primary Election Day in Minneapolis, at the Whittier School.  Minnesota Legislature Senator Linda Berglin retired at the end of July, which led to this primary election for someone to fill her vacated senate seat.

Predator, Prey

I see lots of feral cats, like this wild child, on the Greenway. I imagine the pickings are pretty good, this ex-sparrow among them.

According to a 2007 article, "With shorter and warmer winters becoming more common in the north, Minnesota is seeing a growing problem with feral felines, whose numbers are exploding all over the state."

American Swedish Institute Renovation

A new Nelson Cultura Center is being constructed next to the familiar, lovely Turnblad Mansion that we now know as the American Swedish Institute at 2600 Park Ave.  This fun construction mural informs us that the cultural center will be a LEED Gold certified building, using recycled materials, heated with geothermal, and landscaped to conserve water.

First Ave. Laundromat

In answer to Jo Ann's Franklin laundromat photo yesterday, this one on 29th & First Ave. (by the Greenway entrance) also has big curvy pipes on the roof. Perhaps to vent the driers?

Franklin Laundromat

I've never seen a laudromat with pipes sticking out of the roof.  Anyone know exactly what they are for?  The laundromat is at 903 E. Franklin Ave.
