Casting a Shadow

A bicyclist rides by Smith Foundry--at 1855 E. 28th St. conveniently located, at one time, adjacent to the Soo Line Railroad, now the Midtown Greenway--not shown, to the left of the Foundry; since 1923 the company has been providing casting services for producing many engineered components of modern equipment and machinery.

Belong

The mosaic on the side of the Minneapolis Peace House reads, "A Place to Belong."

Their site says, "Peace House is a welcoming community located in a storefront in the Phillips neighborhood in the heart of inner city Minneapolis, Minnesota.  Founded and supported by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, we support one another by prayer and meditation and respectful listening.  All who come to Peace House share on an equal footing with each other as persons."

James' House

James, enjoying the ambiance of his colorful house, originally built in 1878 in the Eastlake (architect Charles  L.) style, then reframed into the current Craftsman style.  As an artist and (retired) art teacher,  James is applying his whimsical sensibility to adding decor to the interior, a studio, and the yard.  It's an ongoing project.

Jasmine Deli

Tim carries my favorite drink (drip coffee with sweetened condensed milk) at his family's Jasmine Deli--the best Vietnamese restaurant on Eat Street (or anywhere in town).

Washington's Toes

George Washington
Washburn-Fair Oaks Park, 24th Street and Stevens Ave.

I like the way George's toes extend out over the base of the statue.

This is a copy of a statue by Jean Antoine Houdon at the Virginia State Capitol. It was a gift to the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board at the bicentennial of Washington's birth, 1931.

Norske Lutherske Mindekirken

I asked a guy passing by if this is still a working church. He replied, "I don't know. I go to a mosque."
Indeed, the Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church, at  924 E. 21st Street (Philips) is still a working church (since 1922). Its web site says, "Mindekirken has ... a reputation for its music programs, including The Leiv Eriksson Festival, which features Norwegian artists working in a variety of media, particularly music. (Each October)
So, come back in October!

How Will We get Both Balls Down?

Photo: Esther Perry

The football got stuck in the tree, so they tossed up the basketball - to knock out the football.  You know what happened.  Erin got out the lightbulb changing pole and saved the game.

Secret Path

This path was beaten by folks going from Stevens Ave. S. up to the 35W highway overpass at Lake Street. I came across it when I took my bike on an express bus I caught up there.

(I keep meaning to stick up a new photo of Paul Wellstone in place of this badly weather-beaten one, in the center. If you've got one...)
