Phillips' Namesake

In this time of Occupy Wall Street, it might be interesting to recall activists of former times.

Phillips Neighborhood, for instance, is named for activist Wendell Phillips (1811–1884, click to link to Wikipedia).

Phillips worked for Native American and women's rights and for the abolition of slavery.

Phillips said:

"Revolutions are not made: they come. A revolution is as natural a

growth as an oak. It comes out of the past. Its foundations are laid far back."

US v. Brazil, Women's World Cup

Sunday morning, watching the 2011 Women's World Cup [link to schedule etc.] at Midtown Global Market (where you can watch all the games for free on their public TVs).

The USA made a last minute goal to tie with Brazil, then won the game in a kick-out.

Belong

The mosaic on the side of the Minneapolis Peace House reads, "A Place to Belong."

Their site says, "Peace House is a welcoming community located in a storefront in the Phillips neighborhood in the heart of inner city Minneapolis, Minnesota. Founded and supported by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, we support one another by prayer and meditation and respectful listening. All who come to Peace House share on an equal footing with each other as persons."

Norske Lutherske Mindekirken

I asked a guy passing by if this is still a working church. He replied, "I don't know. I go to a mosque."

Indeed, the Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church, at 924 E. 21st Street (Philips) is still a working church (since 1922). Its web site says, "Mindekirken has ... a reputation for its music programs, including The Leiv Eriksson Festival, which features Norwegian artists working in a variety of media, particularly music. (Each October)"

So, come back in October!

Note to Self: Always Carry a Pen

Got talking with this guy on Franklin Ave. E, around 13th St. I didn't have a pen on me to jot down his name, and by the time I got home several hours later, I'd forgotten. Owen? ...Lamar? ...something with two syllables. Sorry, man!
